GraphemeCam - Just-in-Time Decoding Support
Overview
GraphemeCam helps early readers and multilingual learners when they encounter an unfamiliar word during independent reading.
Rather than interrupting the reading flow, GraphemeCam uses the device camera to visually segment the word into graphemes and guide sound-by-sound blending. Designed for moments while reading independently at home or in informal settings when adult support is not immediately available.
Key Aspects
Problem: Children often get stuck on individual words in authentic (non-decodable) text at home or in informal settings such as libraries or after-school.
Solution: On-device word segmentation and sound-by-sound guidance to help learners decode and continue reading.
Constraints: Fully offline-capable to support environments without reliable internet.
Approach: Concept developed after reviewing structured literacy and decoding research to explore how product design can reduce reading friction.
